SILENT NIGHT
Based on the 2005
French film Joyeux
Noel, Silent Night
is a Pulitzer Prize-
winning contem-
porary opera by
American composer
Kevin Puts and
the Michigan Opera
Theatre brings it to
the Detroit Opera
House Nov. 12-20,
along with a host of
complementary programs. The opera tells
the story of actual historic events during
World War I, when a Christmas carol unites
opposing soldiers for a spontaneous cease-
fire on Christmas Eve. Among the soldiers in
the opera is a German Jewish lieutenant
a decision made based on history: Prior to
the rise of the Nazi party, German Jews con-
sidered themselves fully German and served
in the military as well as partaking in all
other aspects of German culture. $29-$152.

TAKE THE CAKE
If you grow up in a Jewish
house, you grow up eating,
Duff Goldman, the grandson
of Holocaust victims, has said. A former
graffiti artist, classically trained pastry
chef (he graduated from the Culinary
Institute of America) and metal craftsman,
Detroit-born Goldman blowtorched his
way into the hearts of audiences around
the country: The executive chef at the

Baltimore-based Charm City Cakes is fea-
tured on the Food Network
s
Ace of Cakes. Celebrated for his
ingenious, sculptural and
often life-sized cakes like a
Hogwarts castle, Star Wars char-
acters, a replica of the Stanley
Cup and more, Goldman heads
back to Michigan to dish on his
life, Jewish holidays, his favorite
foods and more. Presented by
Friends of Jewish Senior Life,
Goldman will be the guest
speaker at the third-annual
Jeffrey Zaslow Media Night
7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17. Zaslow
s wife,
Fox 2
s Sherry Margolis-Zaslow, will also
speak. Guests can also purchase a copy of
Friends Cook, a communal cookbook cre-
ated by JSL, with a foreword written by
Goldman. $36-$54; $118 for VIP seating.

MUSICAL PORTRAIT
After Russian artist and architect Viktor
Hartmann died at age 39 from an aneu-
rism in 1873, a memorial exhibit of more
than 400 pieces was shown. Inspired
by viewing the exhibition of his friend
s
work, composer Modeste Mussorgsky
composed his most famous suite, Pictures
at an Exhibition, consisting of 10 musical
portraits bound together by a promenade
theme. The piece, along with works by
Liszt and Schumann, will be performed
by Russian pianist Alexander Ghindin as
he makes his Chamber Music Society of
Detroit debut 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19.
At 6:45 p.m., a pre-concert lecture will
focus on Pictures at an Exhibition, includ-
ing slides of Hartmann
s artwork. $16-$32
for students; $32-$64 for adults. Seligman
Performing Arts Center, Beverly Hills.
