Celebrity Jews Nate Bloom Special to the Jewish News JEWISH ROCKERS The nominees for 2017 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame were announced on Oct. 18; on Dec. 16, we will find out who’s getting in next year. The Jewish players in nominated bands are noted: The Cars (Elliot Easton, 62, lead guitar); J. Geils Band (every- one in this band, except lead guitarist J. Geils, is Jewish. They are “Magic Dick” Salwitz, 71, harmonica; Peter Wolf, 70, lead singer; Seth Justman, 65, keyboards; Danny Klein, 70, bassist; Stephen Jo Bladd, 74, drummer); Jane’s Addiction (lead singer Perry Farrell, 57, born Peretz Bernstein — last I heard, Farrell is a practicing Jew; and Stephen Perkins, 49, drummer — he had his bar mitzvah in Tel Aviv in 1980); and Yes (Trevor Rabin, 62, guitarist and principal songwriter; and Tony Kaye, 70, keyboards). The famous ’60s Detroit band, MC5, is also nominated. But, as is often the case, only the original members of the band (none Jewish) were deemed eligible for induction. Therefore, ineligible is “Handsome” Dick Manitoba, 62 (born Richard Blum). He was the lead singer for a re-formed version of MC5 from 2005-2011. Wolf Burns, c. 1980s A sad note: British glam-rocker Pete Burns died on Oct. 23, age 57. He’s best known as the lead singer for Dead or Alive, which had a big hit in 1985, “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record).” His mother, who was born in Germany, fled the Nazis for Vienna because her father was Jewish. She had to hide during the war years in Vienna and Burns said that and learning the fate of her Jewish relatives made her always depressed and her troubles were, in many ways, passed on to her son. THIS AND THAT Magician David Blaine, 43, has a new ABC Special, Beyond Magic, airing Tuesday, Nov. Blaine 15, at 10 p.m. He’ll be returning to the sleight-of-hand tricks that first made him famous, rather than the endurance feats he’s done of late. The special features a raft of “amazed” celebrities, including Emma Stone, Johnny Depp and John Travolta. In my last column, I suggested that Mel Gibson may have cast Andrew Garfield, 33, as the star of his new movie, Hacksaw Ridge, because Garfield is Jewish. I said that Gibson could expect that Garfield would defend him in film promotion inter- views and help Gibson’s “career redemp- tion” campaign. Well, shortly after I wrote that, Garfield appeared on Jimmy Kimmel HERALD WHOLESALE PREMIER BATH, LIGHTING & HARDWARE Live, and Kimmel’s first question was about Garfield being Jewish and working with Gibson. Garfield said: “I’m Jewish and in meeting with Gibson I got to really know him, separate from the nonsense and the noise.” I say — mission accomplished, Mr. Gibson. And to Mr. Garfield — do check with all the Jews who worked with Gibson. He didn’t reveal his true self in profes- sional meetings; he revealed his hate to the Jewish police officer who arrested him for drunk driving — and, while drunk at a Hollywood party, when he called Winona Ryder, now 45, an “oven dodger.” * 40% OFF Any One Item Storewide With ad, on qualifying products, new orders only. .5IBN QNt4BUBN QN T, W & F 9 am-5:30 pm 1765 8.
