Sukkot In The D Hundreds
enjoy Detroit sukkahs, holiday events.
I
t was a nonstop Sukkot
holiday at Chabad of Greater
Downtown Detroit as hun-
dreds took part in meals and
events in its sukkahs around
town.
The main ChabaD shipping-
container sukkah, covered with
street art, was located on the
edge of the Chabad House prop-
erty on Mack Avenue, in full
view of thousands of daily com-
muters. The sukkah, which seats
50, was at capacity every holiday
and Shabbat meal, filled with
Detroiters and young profession-
als who work in the city.
Additional events took place
during the intermediate days on
Wayne State and University of
Detroit campuses. The Chabad
mobile sukkah made a stop at
Campus Martius, allowing lunch
goers to make a blessing in the
sukkah and shake the lulav.
The festivities culminated
with a community-wide music
party on Saturday night. More
than 150 revelers took part in
the outdoor party, which includ-
ed a fire pit and s’mores, an open
bar and music by DJ Benny de
la Zona.
For many. it was their first and
only opportunity to fulfill the
Zach Blumstein of West Bloomfield, Marlee Shirman of
mitzvah of eating in a sukkah.
Farmington Hills, Noah Rozenberg of West Bloomfield and
For some, it was the first expo-
Mitchell Barnett of Farmington Hills
sure to anything Jewish in their
lifetimes.
“Having a unique sukkah
allows for people to come in who
otherwise would not necessarily
even know about the holiday,”
said ChabaD Rabbi Yisrael
Pinson. “Sukkot is an opportuni-
ty to celebrate in a very inclusive
fashion without the boundaries
that are naturally present during
the High Holidays.”
The Sukkot events at ChabaD
were sponsored by Bake Station,
Chef Cari Kosher Catering and
Emilie Kahn of Detroit, David Shuman of Oak Park and
Silvers Metal.
