moments | Special Moments Don’t Give Up On The First ‘No’ The Dubins then and now D r. Howard Dubin of West Bloomfield was a young optom- etrist when a colleague’s wife asked Susie, a young single friend of hers, to meet this new fellow recently hired for the practice. Susie made an appointment to see Dubin to get her eyes examined. “She was a beautiful, friendly, charis- matic and charming person,” Howard says. “I called her after office hours and asked if I could take her out on a date.” She turned him down as she was going to New York for the weekend. “I must have taken it in a negative way and dropped the idea of calling again,” he said. “A month later, on a Saturday I needed a date the next day for a Detroit Lions game. I had no one in mind to ask. Then I thought about that young lady who wouldn’t go out with me last month. She was a student at MSU and I thought my last-minute choice would reject me. Sure enough, she was in town and accepted my last-minute invitation.” That was in October 1967. Dr. Howard and Susie Dubin got married in April 1968 and now have been married “a wonderful 48 years.” They have two sons, Arthur and Matthew, a daughter-in-law, Debbie (for- merly Weinstein), and three “spectacular” grandkids: Alivia, Marcus and Tessa. * Lillian Ruby Beavers, daughter of Andrea and David Jacobson, will become a bat mitz- vah on Friday, Oct. 28, at Congregation Beth Ahm in West Beavers Bloomfield.
