Cancer survivor finds strength
in spirituality — and art.

Elizabeth Katz | Special to the Jewish News

Z

oe Marcus, 62, a Southfield
resident who is now living
near Tampa, Fla., was diag-
nosed with head and neck cancer
approximately 2½ years ago. She lost a
third of her face and half of her teeth to
treat the cancer that originated in the
upper right side of her palate and in the
uppermost portion of her gums.
She has undergone chemotherapy,
radiation and 25 different surgeries to
eliminate the cancer and to reconstruct
her face. Though she calls the begin-
nings of her surgeries her “dark times,”
she now finds humor in the situation.
“I tell people I went from looking like
Jimmy Durante to looking like Walter
Matthau,” she said. “I never considered
myself a beautiful woman, but I was
symmetrical. I didn’t realize I was going
to lose half my mouth.”
Marcus, who previously survived kid-
ney cancer, noticed before the diagnosis
an area of her upper gums was soft.

Eventually, her cancer was discovered.
“Those first surgeries were very
hard on me,” Marcus said. “The second
round of surgeries was more about
reconstruction.”
Today, Marcus faces more recon-
structive surgeries and returns to
the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute for maintenance checks to
make sure her cancer hasn’t returned.
She credits Howard, her husband
of 30 years; her children, Aaron, Cale,
Madison and Mimi; and her friends and
extended family for helping her through
her cancer treatments.
“I have a circle of friends, and we
share the same spirituality,” she said.
“I’ve definitely learned that the circle of
trust you have in your friends and fam-
ily is the most important thing you can
have in your life.
“I pray every day. My husband and I
pray silently and out loud. We’re both
on the same wavelength.”
