ohammed Al-Samawi and
Dan Pincus will share their
personal story of a Muslim-
Jewish partnership that overcame dif-
ferences and stereotypes at a program
at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, at the
Townsend Hotel in Birmingham.
The event is spon-
sored by the Jewish
Community Relations
Council/AJC and the
Michigan Muslim
Community Council.
In March 2015,
Al-Samawi was
forced to flee his
Mohammed
home in Sana’a,
Al-Samawi
Yemen, after receiving
death threats for his
activities promoting
relations between
Yemeni Muslims and
Israeli Jews. He was in
Aden, Yemen, when
he found himself
caught in a three-way
Dan Pincus
crossfire between
Yemeni Houthis invading the Al Qaeda-
controlled city while a Saudi Arabian-led

coalition navy and air force imposed a
naval blockade and aerial bombardment.
He reached out to the American and
Israeli friends he had met at interfaith
conferences. Together, they orchestrated
Al-Samawi’s rescue and immigration to
the U.S. Today, he lives in Washington,
D.C., where he does research on religious
extremism in Yemen and Pakistan for
the International Center for Religion and
Diplomacy.
Pincus, who lives in New York, is
passionate about interfaith relations
and arts. He serves on the boards of the
American Jewish Committee and the
Muslim Jewish Conference.
In Detroit, the pair also will speak
to young professionals at 7:30 p.m.
on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Center
for Creative Studies-Taubman Center
in Detroit. The event is sponsored
by Access Detroit, JCRC/AJC and the
Muslim-Jewish Forum.
“We will share our story that may
inspire others to realize what they have
in common,” Pincus said.
A dessert reception follows each free
program. To register for either event, call

Awaken the Beauty Within...

TWEENS CAN GET BOOKS AT FAMILY DAY

The Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan (JHSM) presents Family Day
11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at the
Detroit Historical Museum to close the
exhi bit “Chasing Dreams: Baseball and
Becoming American.”
“Chasing Dreams” highlights the
ways in which our national pastime
has served as a pathway for learning
and understanding American values
for Jews and other immigrant and
minority groups and their descen-
dants.
PJ Our Way gives the gift of Jewish
books to tweens all over the United
States. Each month they will pick from
four selections (no more just getting
books!) giving them more choices on
their journey toward being lifelong
readers while introducing them to
Jewish ideas that are relevant to them.
“PJ Our Way in Metropolitan
Detroit is excited to kick off pro-
gramming for Jewish tweens at the
Chasing Dreams Family Day,” said Gail
Greenberg, PJ Library professional.
PJ Our Way will host a craft table
at which kids can create a baseball
