beyond Adam’s adolescence. He was at
UC Berkeley in the late 1970s, on his
own path to getting a law degree, when
Leonard made a stop at Wheeler Hall
on a college speaking tour.
“I waited for him to finish,” Adam
recalls with a painful clarity. “I thought
we were going to go to dinner together.
He came up the aisle, signed some auto-
graphs and came up to me and said,
‘I have to catch a plane. I got another
commitment I got to make tomorrow
in Los Angeles, and I’m leaving.’”
“I was devastated,” Adam says.
“‘What am I, borscht?’ It wasn’t until
later in his life that it was less about
Leonard and his career and more about
‘what’s going on with my kids and my
grandchildren.’”
Adam and Leonard were estranged
for a stretch, exacerbated by the actor’s
drinking and his son’s drug use. When
asked if it was difficult to forgive his
father, he doesn’t hesitate.
“No, because I’m in 12-step, and
that’s a huge part of what 12-step’s all
about.”
Resentments and setbacks play
only a passing role in For the Love of
Spock, which is an unabashed tribute to
Leonard’s contributions as an actor and
a man to a character who was and is
widely embraced for embodying intel-
ligence, science, fairness and integrity.
(And for being different, of course, and
living on the margins of mainstream
society.)
The film omits Leonard’s record as
a major benefactor of Jewish causes:
the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, a
childhood center at Temple Israel of
Hollywood and the career counseling
center at Beit T’Shuvah, a Jewish recov-
ery house.
It also leaves out the degree to which
Leonard passed down his pride and
love of being Jewish.
“I would say that I am more religious
than my father was,” Adam says. “I like
to study Torah, I like to go to services
on a regular basis on Friday night.
Particularly the weekly Torah study has
been very meaningful to me over the
past couple of years. It’s just mind-bog-
gling to me about the divine inspiration
of the written word and how it always
applies to something going on in my
life. This is what enriches my life, and
brings new meaning to my life.”

Eric Trager: Arab Fall
Soon after the “Arab Spring,” a new
leader from one of Egypt’s most powerful
organizations, the Muslim Brotherhood,
was elected president. One year later, a
military coup toppled Mohamed Morsi,
and he was put on trial.
How did it all happen — and
why? Arab Fall examines the Muslim
Brotherhood’s decision-making
throughout this critical period. Based
on extensive research and interviews
with Brotherhood leaders and Mohamed
Morsi himself, Trager explains how
the very characteristics that helped the
Brotherhood win power also contributed
to its downfall.

Daniel Bergner: Sing for Your Life: A
Story of Race, Music and Family
Ryan Speedo Green grew up in a
bullet-riddled house across the street
from a drug dealer’s headquarters. In
elementary school, he was in a program
for uncontrollable kids. By the time he
was in 6th grade, Ryan was put in shack-
les and taken away.
Then when he was 15, Ryan heard
Denyce Graves perform in Carmen. The
music, and two teachers who recognized
something in Ryan that he couldn’t see in
himself, changed his life.
This true story tells of a journey
from a place of despair to stardom, of
racial complexity and about believing in
dreams.

Are you a carrier of the
Tay-Sachs disease gene?
Are you a carrier of the Tay-Sachs disease gene?
Tay-Sachs disease is a rare inherited disease of the central nervous system passed from parents
to child. Both parents must be carriers of a mutation in the HEXA gene to pass the disease
on to their children. If you know that you are a carrier of this abnormal HEXA gene, we invite
you to participate in our research project.
Your participation will contribute to the knowledge gained from this research project. Knowledge
gained will be used to help others through the development of new and improved carrier
screening tests for people like you.
We are looking for 50 people known to carry the abnormal Tay-Sachs gene. We ask participants
in the project to donate about 1 tablespoon of blood for test development. Only a single visit
is required.
You qualify to volunteer if you are:
