A Family Tradition

y son, Daniel, was born a
month early (in 1986). As it
happened, it was the day we
were moving into a new house,” writes

thought I had plenty of time, but babies
decide to come when they want! Allen,
my husband, and I took off for the hos-
pital and a half-hour after our arrival,

mitzvah project, she volunteered at the
Greenhouse Project at Yad Ezra in Berkley.

“Fast forward to this summer,” she
continues. “My daughter, Rivka, was preg-
nant with twins and due July 20. She and
her husband, Dave, were moving into a
new apartment July 1.
“Allen and I rented an apartment in
Chicago, where they live, for two months
to help them with the twins at the begin-
ning. We moved in June 27 and helped
them with packing up their apartment.
Rivka had a doctor’s appointment June

30, and we got a call that she was going
to the hospital and would be induced that
night.
“July 1 came, and Allen and I worked
with the movers to move Rivka and Dave
into their new apartment, since they were
otherwise occupied! Maya and Jonah
were born on July 1. Rivka says to this
day that it was beshert since we owed the
world a move! We really don’t want this to
be a family tradition, but I guess it is what
it is!”

He is a student at Clifford Smart Middle
School in Commerce Township. As part
of his mitzvah project, Ben rode his bike
30 miles and raised more than $1,500
for Bike MS, an event sponsored by the
National MS Society. He found it very
meaningful to help bring awareness and
raise funds in the effort to find a cure for
Multiple Sclerosis.

Aaron is a student at Walnut Creek
Middle School in West Bloomfield. As
part of his mitzvah project, he volunteered
at Temple Israel for the Housing the
Homeless project, helping residents of the
South Oakland Shelter move. He found
this experience to be very rewarding.

Hannah is a student at Warner Middle

many mitzvah experiences, Bailey felt
volunteering in the Orchard Lake Middle
School Community Garden to be the most
meaningful.
