SEE THE SPHINX
In 1996, U-M and Interlochen Arts
Academy grad Aaron Dworkin, a violinist
himself, founded the Detroit-based Sphinx
Organization to encourage the participa-
tion of blacks and Latinos in classical music,
under the direction of special artistic advi-
sor Yo-Yo Ma. Sphinx Virtuosi, one of the
organization’s programs, is a conductor-
less ensemble of soloists who tour annu-
ally, making stops at Carnegie Hall and
Chicago’s Harris Theater. At 6 p.m. Thursday,
Oct. 27, the Sphinx Virtuosi (featuring the
Catalyst Quartet, shown) performs at the
Berman Center for Performing Arts at the
West Bloomfield JCC. Tickets start at $10.

AT THE MOVIES

Opening Friday, Oct. 21: Keeping Up
with the Joneses is a comedy/drama
about a pair of covert spies (Jon Hamm
and Gal Wonder Woman Gadot, 31)
who move into a nice suburban neigh-
borhood. Their neighbors discover their
real jobs and get embroiled in an inter-
national espionage plot. The neighbors
are played by Zach Galifianakis and Isla
Fisher, 40. Comedian Ari Shaffir, 42,
has a large supporting role. By the way,
this film is fine for the whole family.

DAVEED DIGGS MOVES ON

Daveed Diggs, 34, became famous
and won a Tony Award for play-
ing Thomas Jefferson/Lafayette in
Hamilton. He left the show in July and

Fisher

Diggs

soon was cast in Black-Ish, the hit ABC
series. He began guest-starring on the
series on Sept. 28 and will appear in an
arc of six episodes. He plays Johan, the
brother of family matriarch Rainbow
(Tracee Ellis Ross, 43). Rainbow and
Johan are biracial and Johan comes
into conflict with Rainbow’s African
American husband, Dre, about black
identity. In real life, Diggs and Ross are
biracial and both have a Jewish parent
— his mother and her father.
Diggs told Time: “Johan doesn’t feel
the same cultural divide as Dre. He’s
spent time in Europe and felt comfort-
able in spaces that are mostly white.
I think for Dre there are black-people
things and not-black-people things, and
Johan doesn’t have that.”
