JET RETURNS
The Jewish Ensemble Theatre opens
its new season with a world premiere

Piper Laurie

penned by JET playwright-in-residence
Kitty Dubin. Rights of Passage explores
the defining moments of life, from birth
to death, with Dubin’s trademark blend
of laugh-out-loud comedy and heartfelt
drama. “It’s really a group of one-act plays,
equal parts comedy and drama and each
revolving around a Jewish rite of passage
— from a bris to a shivah,” Dubin told the
JN. Starring Fred Buchalter, Ruth Crawford,
Julia Glander and more, the play runs Oct.
20-Nov. 13. $16-$44. (248) 788-2900;

If you’re like me, you like to know
about interesting Jewish candidates
before election day and take a look,
now and then, at how they’re doing in
the polls. Let’s call Missouri, this year,
“5 Stars-of David.” (The online New
York Times and RealClearPolitics have
daily updated charts of the polling on
Senate/Governor races.)
Running as the Republican nomi-
nee for Missouri governor is Eric
Grietens, 42. Here are but a few
of the highlights of his incredible
resume — this St. Louis native was a
Rhodes Scholar; has a Ph.D. in devel-
opment studies; became a Navy Seal
after getting his doctorate; led raids
on Al-Qaeda cells; was awarded the
Bronze star and Purple Heart; founded
the Mission Continues, a vets group,
and he’s written three books, one of
which is a memoir about his Seal ser-
vice.

Laurie was born

Tyler Street in
Detroit. Her fam-
ily moved to

Arts & Life Editor
attended Hebrew
school — and
Laurie became
a movie star by age 17. Now, at age 84,
the three-time Oscar nominee — for The
Hustler (1961), Carrie (1976) and Children
of a Lesser God (1986) — will return to
her hometown for an appearance at
the Detroit Film Theatre at the DIA 7:30
p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20. In An Evening
with Piper Laurie, guests will view clips
of her films, including 1950s adventure
films with Tony Curtis, Rock Hudson
and Donald O’Connor, and TV show Twin
Peaks, for which she won a Golden Globe.
The viewing will be followed by a discus-
sion with Elliot Wilhelm, curator of film at
the DIA, including an opportunity to take
questions from the audience. $15.

As I write this, Greitens’ Democratic
opponent is doing better than expect-
ed and the race is neck-and-neck.
Meanwhile, another tribe member,
Democrat Jason Kander, 35, is also
doing much better than expected
in his attempt to oust GOP Senator
Roy Blunt. After graduating from
Georgetown Law School, Kander did
a tour of duty in Afghanistan as an
Army lieutenant. Subsequently, he
served in the Missouri legislature and
as Missouri’s Secretary of State.
He believes in background gun
checks and countered Blount’s criti-
cism of his position by posting a video
in which he took apart and assembled
a rifle, blindfolded. The race is virtu-
ally tied in the latest polls.
Kander has known his wife, Diana
Kagan, 34, since grade school. They
reunited at Georgetown Law and
married in 2003. A highly successful
start-up expert, Kagan is the daughter
of Russian Jewish immigrants. Jason’s
great uncle is John Kander, 89,
the music composer and co-lyricist
of many hits, including “Chicago,”
“Cabaret” and “New York, New York.”
