hey used colorful paint to leave
their mark on a Highland Park
neighborhood on the rise.
More than a dozen students from Adat
Shalom Synagogue’s Teen Volunteer
Corps visited Avalon Village Sept. 18.,
painting signs that read “Future Love
Coming Soon” to help beautify a for-
merly blighted block on Avalon Street.
The neighborhood is experiencing
a dramatic transformation thanks to
the efforts of Shamayim “Mama Shu”
Harris, a Highland Park resident whose
2-year-old son Jakobi was killed by a
hit-and-run driver in 2007. The tragedy
inspired Harris to take positive action
and rebuild her community with the
help of donors and volunteers.
“What Mama Shu is doing is
absolutely incredible,” said Jessica
Goldberg, 14, vice president of the
Teen Volunteer Corps. “It’s amazing
that I had an opportunity to be even a
small part of her vision.”
Jodi Gross, director of adult learning
and youth engagement, organized the
hands-on volunteer opportunity.
