Get inspired this

autumn by a new

wave of fireplaces.

Lynne Konstantin | Arts & Life Editor

W

e love a lovely mantel.
But if you crave a clean-
lined contemporary vision
in flames, there have never been more
options.
Once upon a time, a cozy indoor
fireplace was made of brick, burned
logs and required soot-clearing chim-
ney sweep. Today, wood-burning
fireplaces have become more energy-
efficient and versatile, and alternatives
range from gas, electric and alternative
fuel varieties.

Minimalist designs can include free-
standing centerpieces, two- or even
three-sided designs that act as a natural
divider between multiple rooms, glass-
enclosed or plein-air.
Going modern with a fireplace and
surround does not necessitate a simi-
larly designed decor — the clean lines
are equally at home tucked into a rustic
or traditional environment or stream-
lined into a transitional or contempo-
rary home. Here, some of our favorite
designs.

ABOVE: Cut-outs
for log storage lend
rustic texture to a
clean-lined plaster
surround.
