Shearer, 72, plays the competition
announcer. Shearer’s first big role, as a child
actor, came in the 1953 film The Robe. I
remembered Shearer’s early role when I
learned, last week, that the co-winner of
the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics, Michael
Kosterlitz, 73, is the nephew of the late
Henry Koster, the Oscar-nominated direc-
tor of The Robe. Both Henry and his bril-
liant bio-chemist brother, Hans Kosterlitz
(Michael’s father), fled Nazi Germany. Hans
is credited with being one of the key dis-
covers of endorphins (natural pain killers).
Michael, whose work is harder to sum-
marize, is a professor of physics at Brown
University.

revealed on a talk show that the aristocratic
titles that she and her husband currently
hold will not survive them. Guest’s paternal
Jewish grandfather, a British doctor and
Labour Party stalwart, got the title of Baron
of Haden-Guest in 1945, when the Labour
Party sought to put more of its mem-
bers in the House of Lords. Christopher’s
father moved to New York and married
Christopher’s mother, an American Jew
(Christopher is secular). His father, the
fourth Baron Haden-Guest, died in 1996
and Christopher is the fifth Baron. Jamie’s
title is Lady Baron-Guest. However, British
law has been changed recently, and many
noble titles created in the 20th century, like
theirs, will not be inheritable.

Tay-Sachs disease is a rare inherited disease of the central nervous system passed from parents
to child. Both parents must be carriers of a mutation in the HEXA gene to pass the disease
on to their children. If you know that you are a carrier of this abnormal HEXA gene, we invite
you to participate in our research project.

Your participation will contribute to the knowledge gained from this research project. Knowledge
gained will be used to help others through the development of new and improved carrier
screening tests for people like you.

We are looking for 50 people known to carry the abnormal Tay-Sachs gene. We ask participants
in the project to donate about 1 tablespoon of blood for test development. Only a single visit
is required.

You qualify to volunteer if you are:

‡0DOHRU)HPDOHDWOHDVW\HDUVRIDJHRUROGHU

‡$FDUULHURIWKH7D\6DFKVGLVHDVHJHQH

You will receive $100.00 compensation for your time for the study visit.
