Israel Mourns A Founder

Times of Israel

F

ormer Israeli President and Prime
Minister Shimon Peres died Sept.
28 at age 93, two weeks after
suffering a major stroke. His passing
was practically the only issue in Israel’s
Hebrew-language newspapers on Sept.
30, the day of his funeral.
Peres, the last of Israel’s founding
fathers, was laid to rest at Mount Herzl
cemetery in Jerusalem at a ceremony
attended by dignitaries from at least 70
countries, among them President Barack
Obama, former President Bill Clinton,
Britain’s Prince Charles and regional
statesmen such as Palestinian Authority
President Mahmoud Abbas and Egyptian
Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.
Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper had a
somber photo of Bill Clinton paying his
respects to Peres, his longtime friend,
as his body lie in state at the Knesset
on Sept. 29. The paper also featured a
touching eulogy by Peres’ granddaughter
Mika Almog.

Israel Hayom stressed the number of
world leaders who chose to attend the
funeral. It dedicated two pages to Abbas’
decision to take part, while chiding
Arab-Israeli Knesset members for failing
to participate in the official ceremony.
Israel Hayom’s Dror Eydar wrote about
the lessons he drew from Peres, from
showing respect to political adversaries
to standing up for your principles no
matter how many people object.
Haaretz’s contributors offered a wide
range of opinions, with some admiring
and some criticizing. Former British
Prime Minister and Quartet head Tony
Blair wrote Peres had the gift of persis-
tence and never gave up on his dreams
and hopes: “Throughout his whole life,
he believed with all the optimism inher-
ent to him that his vision for Israel and
the world, a vision full of compassion,
creative and connected to every level of
culture, creed and race, would become a
reality.”
