COLLABORATIVE EFFECT
Sixteen artists — local, national and inter-
national — of virtually every medium —
dance, film, installation, portraiture and
more — will gather to display their works
for a three-day pop-up gallery, “Micro
Macro Art Biome,” Oct. 14-16. Held at
Grand On River, a historic bank build-
ing on Grand River in Detroit, the show’s

To See Beyond

works all relate by a common theme
(micro-macro) and color motif (indigo),
“to become a sanctuary for this specific
concept, to create a unity that is not based
upon nationality, level of experience or
medium,” says project director and partici-
pating artist G. Louise Cooper. Included:
To See Beyond, a filmed dance piece by
Tess Keesling, Vivian Costello and Sam
Paraventi, portraiture by Steve Whittaker
and Sam Hunt and works by filmmaker
Jonathon D’Ambrosio. Cargocollective.

Carmen

Prepon

Stuart

Hipwells, a couple who live seemingly
perfect lives. One day, she sees something
ominous. Not long after, Megan Hipwell
goes missing and is presumed dead.
Co-stars include Lisa Kudrow, 53, as a for-
mer co-worker of Tom’s and Laura Prepon,
36, as Cathy, an old friend of Rachel’s.
Birth of a Nation is very different from
the 1915 film of the same name that cel-
ebrated the rise of the Ku Klux Klan. It’s the
story of Nat Turner, a (real-life) Virginia slave
who led a famous slave revolt in 1831. It
was written and directed by Nate Parker,
who stars as Turner. The film got good
reviews at Sundance. The handsome Armie

Hammer, 30, plays Samuel Turner, the
son of Nat Turner’s slave master. Samuel
was about the same age as Nat and took
a liking to him and let him be educated
and protected him. While Hammer once
referred to himself as “half Jewish,” he has
but one Jewish great-grandparent: the
famous industrialist Armand Hammer.
Jason Stuart, 57, an openly gay actor and
stand-up comedian, plays a much nastier
slave master. Stuart told Out magazine that
things are changing regarding casting gay
actors: “Look at someone like me: a gay
liberal Jew playing a white, heterosexual
Christian plantation owner.”
