Grand Slam
Jewish Historical Society
fundraiser celebrates
baseball exhibit.
O
n Sept. 8, more than 330 people
attended “Chasing Dreams
Season Opener” at the Detroit
Historical Museum — an evening of
baseball, history, food and fun to benefit
the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan
(JHSM).
The event coincides with Chasing Dreams:
Baseball and Becoming an American, on
display at the museum through Nov. 27.
The JHSM added to the traveling exhibit
from the National Museum of American
Jewish History with photo panels and arti-
facts highlighting Detroit baseball history,
including local Jewish baseball lore. Robert
Matthews of Farmington Hills lent a white
yarmulke signed by Sandy Koufax and other
memorabilia.
Highlights of the evening, which raised
$15,000 for JHSM, were “Rabbis Talking
Baseball” with Rabbis Aaron Bergman of
Adat Shalom Synagogue, Joseph Krakoff of
the Jewish Chaplaincy and Hospice Network
and Mark Miller of Temple Beth El, and a
“Conversation with Dan Dickerson,” play-by-
play radio voice of the Detroit Tigers.
Festive baseball decorations and stadium
food added to the atmosphere.
