A Joyful Noise

Bais Chabad’s new Torah is paraded to its new home.

O

n Sunday, Aug. 28, Orchard
Lake and Maple roads in
West Bloomfield resonated
with music and percussion instru-
ments, singing and dancing, as several
hundred men, women and children
accompanied a new sefer Torah —
donated by Malca and Jerome Katz
and Zahava and Matan Diminsky in
memory of their late parents, Shmulik
and Mina Meita Lis — to its new
home at the Tugman Bais Chabad
Torah Center.
Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg of Bais
Chabad explains, “The tradition of
bringing a new Torah into a shul with

such public exultation dates back to
biblical times. The Book of Samuel
records how King David brought the
Holy Ark and the tablets to Jerusalem
for the first time with music and fan-
fare, with King David himself dancing
vigorously and joyously in front of the
multitudes.”
The highlight was when Bais
Chabad’s Torah scrolls came out to
“greet” and welcome their beloved new
companion. The Torahs were led by a
restored Torah scroll saved from the
fire and destruction of Kristallnacht in
Germany in 1938.
