High Holiday services are rooted in
meaning

This is a place I’m proud to call home

inspires me, because that’s what makes
our
community so special.

or the Jewish community,
autumn means much more
than the start of school and the
opening of cider mills. The seasonal
change also signals the approaching
High Holidays. Many local synagogues
view September as a prime time for
membership recruitment and report
an increase in inquiries and affilia-
tions.
“This is the annual membership
moment and a mental call to action.
People don’t get serious until Labor
Day,” says David Tisdale, executive
director of Temple Israel in West
Bloomfield. About 50 percent of the
temple’s new members join before the
high holidays, he says.

engagement director at Temple Kol
Ami in West Bloomfield, says the
synagogue experiences its greatest
interest in membership during the
early fall. “They want to be sure that
they have a place to go for the High
Holidays,” she says.
Whether prospective members are
motivated by an interest in ritual, an
upcoming life-cycle event or seek the
social experience of a congregation,
says David Goodman, executive direc-
tor of Congregation Beth Ahm in West
Bloomfield, this is the time “when
people look around if they are unaf-
filiated or want to make a change.”
Shira Shapiro, executive director
of Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield, says, “We definitely see
more new members now because
they want tickets for the High
Holidays.”
Frederick Frank, executive
director of Temple Emanu-El in
Oak Park, and Andre Douville,
executive director of Temple Shir
Shalom in West Bloomfield, con-
cur that interest in membership
Frederick Frank has this seasonal component.
However, as noted by Young
Israel of Oak Park and other
congregations, families join all
year long, sometimes when they
relocate to the Detroit area or
if they move near a particular
synagogue.
Some congregations offer spe-
Rabbi Schneur
cial membership promotions at
Silberberg
this time of year. Congregation
Beth Ahm offers a $36 annual
membership to those 36 and
younger and Congregation Adat
Shalom in Farmington Hills
offers free membership for
singles and couples under 30 and
reduced fees for those 31 to 35
throughout the year.
