Active Volunteer
T
essie Rose Freeman, 103, formerly
of Detroit and Huntington Woods,
died Sept. 4, in Encinitas, Calif.
She was born July 9, 1913, and was
raised in Detroit. She graduated from
Detroit’s Northern High School in 1930.
In March 1931, not yet 18 years of age, she
married Jack Freeman, 10 years her senior,
to whom she remained married until his
death in 1987. Following brief stints in Los
Angeles and Houston in the mid-1930s,
Tessie and her family returned to Detroit
prior to the Second World War.
Tessie was active in the community
with significant volunteer service to the
Infant Service Group, the American
Red Cross, what was then known as the
Detroit Society for Crippled Children and
Adults, the Congregation Ahavas Achim
Sisterhood (and later, following the merger
with Beth Aaron, Congregation Beth
Achim) and other organizations.
Her younger son, Irv, remembers that
when he was growing up, their basement
served as the warehouse for the Infant
Service Group’s supply of formula and baby
food for delivery to the children of needy
families.
Following Jack’s retirement in the early
1970s, they moved to Bradenton, Fla. Tessie
became active in a number of organiza-
tions, including the then-new Temple Beth
ZELIG “ZEL” LANDY,
92, of Bloomfield
Township, died Sept. 19,
2016.
As a youth, he was a
dedicated member of
Hashomer Hatzair and
studied Hebrew for 13
Landy
years. A World War II vet-
eran, Zel was a lieutenant
in the Army Air Corps in communications
and served in England, France, Italy and
Germany.
When he came home, he went to Wayne
State University with his wife and studied
El, where Tessie was in charge of the kitch-
en. Jack and Tessie dedicated the Eternal
Light at the temple in honor of their daugh-
ter Naomi Joy, who died in 1954 at age 18.
In the year 2000, Tessie moved to
Encinitas, Calif., near the then-home of
her grandson Bob. She lived in Seacrest
Village, the Jewish retirement center in
the San Diego region. An active volunteer
into her late 90s, Tessie spent one day
a week at the Rancho Coastal Humane
Society Thrift shop and had several roles
at Seacrest, including helping in the library
and the exercise room, and welcoming
new residents. Tessie’s Judaism was always
an important part of her life and, in April
2007, at the age of 93, she celebrated her
bat mitzvah wearing the same tallis her
granddaughter Katie had worn at her own
bat mitzvah five months earlier.
In addition to her husband and daugh-
ter, Tessie was predeceased by her parents,
Abraham and Sarah Steinberg; sister, Belle;
brothers, Maurice, Charles and Lewis.
She is survived by a sister, Ethel Roberts;
her sons, Irv (Julie) Freeman and Jerry
(Ruth) Freeman; grandchildren, Sue, Bob
