impact on the entire family system.
When the whole family participates,
there is a much higher probability of
positive outcomes.
JN: Does your program work in
conjunction with traditional 12-step
programs such as AA (Alcoholics
Anonymous), NA (Narcotics
Anonymous) or Al-Anon (for family
members)?
PF: Support groups are a key com-
ponent to a meaningful recovery. Our
program includes attending 12-step
meetings as well as providing our cli-
ents some newer alternatives such as
Smart Recovery and Refuge Recovery
groups.
JN: Do interventions work? Is
there a recommended method that is
most effective?
PF: Yes, interventions absolutely
work, and they are most effective
when led by a trained interventionist
who puts together a strong and sup-
portive team. Just as each individual
is unique, each intervention should
use an individualized approach. Many
times we are able to provide what is
called an invitational intervention,
where the entire family is invited to
participate, and they openly invite the
individual who is struggling with an
addiction. However, there are also situ-
ations where a surprise intervention
is more effective. In every interven-
tion, the main objective is to get the
loved one to accept treatment and
understand that the intervention is an
expression of love and commitment to
the person and their recovery.
JN: What are some of the keys to
maintaining long-term recovery?
PF: Having a purpose in life and
recognizing the chronic nature of
addiction. The addict should also
understand the importance of using
the various tools of recovery, such as
12-step meetings and other supports.
It also helps to have a specific recovery
plan in place after the initial treatment
phase.
JN: Are the services you provide
different for those addicted to drugs
than for alcoholics?
PF: The basic services we provide

are the same for drugs and alcohol
although our recommendations may
vary based on the individual client.
JN: Do you deal with other types
of addictions, such as gambling or
compulsive shopping or eating?
PF: Yes, we work with all types of
addictions. We have a broad range of
resources and trusted relationships
with treatment providers across the
country who specialize in all forms of
addiction and mental illness.
JN: Briefly describe the other
aspects of your business — Feinberg
Catastrophic Services and Bridgeway
Care Management.
PF: Feinberg Catastrophic Services
provides case management to individ-
uals who have sustained catastrophic
injuries from a car accident, such as
brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and
amputations.
Bridgeway Care Management &
Home Care provides care management
and in-home caregiving for seniors,
provided by a team of knowledgeable
and compassionate registered nurses
and social workers.
JN: How did you happen to choose
this field? Was there a personal situ-
ation in your life that inspired you to
help others in this way?
PF: I initially became involved in
this field working with catastrophi-
cally injured clients who were injured
because of their substance abuse or
who subsequently became addicted to
opiate pain medication. I also began
seeing a high level of alcoholism
and prescription drug abuse among
seniors, and I wanted to provide an
avenue of hope and healing to that
population as well.
In addition, I had a situation in
my own family that showed me how
important it is for the recovering
addict to have an advocate and strong
family support. I know firsthand how
overwhelming addiction can be, but
I also learned what is possible and
how inspiring recovery can be. That
is why I am committed to supporting
clients and their families through this
process.
