communications director, says that
most callers are younger people
who have seen the ads featuring
the membership offer. Some have
participated in synagogue pro-
grams during the year or attended
services and then decided to join.
“We encourage people to
come to services before the High
Holidays to get a feel for the ser-
vice and the congregation and to
meet the rabbi,” Gorman says.
Steven Fine, executive director at
Congregation B’nai Moshe in West
Bloomfield, also urges prospective
members to attend Shabbat ser-
vices as he feels that High Holiday
services are not typical and so not
the best time to “try us out.”
B’nai Moshe allows new mem-
bers to set their own dues for the
first year. Fine says that he asks
prospective members to tell him
“what’s fair” in regard to dues. At
Kol Ami, new members are asked
to make a donation toward the
first year of membership although
the regular five-year building fund
commitment is required, Gorman
explains.
At the Sara and Morris Tugman
Bais Chabad Torah Center in
West Bloomfield, “We don’t focus
on membership although ever y
shul would like new members, us
included. People feel more like par-
ticipants if they are members,” says
Rabbi Schneur Silberberg, outreach
director. “We welcome members
and non-members alike for the
high holidays. There is a suggested
donation of $180, but no one is
collecting tickets.”
Other congregations provide
tickets for members’ relatives and
friends visiting from out of town,
usually for a donation or set fee —
$72 to $350 per ticket according to
local synagogue websites. However,
some congregations offer to assist
individuals who cannot afford the
fee. Also, at Beth Ahm, the High
Holiday ticket purchase will be
credited to a new membership for
those who later decide to join the
congregation.
