or the younger crowd, pony and train rides
along with bouncers, arts and crafts, magi-
cians and ice cream were popular draws at
Temple Israel’s annual Labor Day picnic.
For parents and grandparents, important draws
included a Brotherhood-hosted blood drive through
the Red Cross and a congregation-sponsored blood
marrow recruitment drive through Gift of Life.
Blood donors gave more than 60 units of blood. “It’s
my way of giving back to society,” said blood drive
chair Mike Mickelson, M.D. “This life-giving cause is
a perfect fit for me.”
The Sept. 5 picnic provided teens from Youth
Federation of Temple Israel (YFTI) a ready pool to
enlist homeowners in need of work around the house
in exchange for a contribution on Mitzvah Day 2016
— Sunday, Oct. 16. All contributions will support
youth scholarships.
The Morris and Esther Bittker Fund underwrote
the picnic, which brought 2,500 people to the West
Bloomfield synagogue.

YFTI members: Jake Fishkind, 17; Maddie Bennett, 16; Lauren Ruby, 17,
all of Bloomfield Hills; Jordan Shefman, 15, of West Bloomfield; Jordyn
Bertman, 16, of Farmington Hills; and Sophie Dwoskin, 17, and Lauren
Tarnopol, 15, both of West Bloomfield.

Blood donors Jack
and Nancy Shapiro
and Vicki Putnik, all
of West Bloomfield,

from Vicki’s 4-year-
old son, Noah.
