Fundraiser Set For
Preschool That Aids
Challenged Children
5
hayna Pinson, 6, is a little girl
whose life took an extraor-
dinary turn after a donor
stepped forward with a gift.
Born a healthy baby, as she grew
older, Shayna began getting easily
frustrated and then had extended
tantrums. Her speech was limited, and
she had gross motor and sensory chal-
lenges.
Her parents, Rabbi Yisrael and
Devorah Pinson, tried finding help
at several schools and with special-
ists, but progress was slow. Then in
March 2015, they turned to Walnut
Lake Preschool and Developmental
Kindergarten.
Founded in 2009 by the Center for
Early Childhood Development, part of
an outreach program of the Michigan
Psychoanalytic Institute, the school
offers a specialized curriculum to
address the emotional, behavioral and
developmental challenges of each child
and then works to help students transi-
tion to a regular school or classroom.
Shortly after enrolling, Shayna began
improving.
"She learned how to put her feel-
ings into words:' said Rabbi Pinson,
executive director of Chabad of Greater
Downtown Detroit
As important as giving Shayna the
tools she needs and letting her be her-
self, rather than fitting her into a mold,
they also have given us support as par-
ents, guiding us emotionally and with
practical suggestions and references:'
Devorah Pinson said.
Like most of the students, Shayna
attends the school because a donor
provided a scholarship. The nonprofit
private school offers intense, directed
care that is effective but costly. Classes
are small, and there's much interaction
among parents, teachers and staff Don
Spivak and Nancy Blieden co-direct the
school.
The school will host a fundraising
dinner at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept 24,
at the Corners: A Caring Community
(site of the school), 2075 Walnut Lake
Road in West Bloomfield. Tickets are
$150, including dinner, drinks, dessert
and music. A $40 ticket is for desserts
and music only at 8:30 p.m.
