Alumni To Give $5 Million
Each To WSU Law

R

eal estate developers, professional
sports team owners and alumni
Stephen M. Ross and Dan Gilbert
said they will donate $5 million each to
the Wayne State University Law School.
Both gifts represent the largest dona-
tions in the law school's history.
Ross and Gilbert's gifts will create the
Benson Legacy Fund for Wayne Law and
the Benson Endowed Enhancement Fund
for Wayne Law. They named the funds in
recognition of Wayne Law Dean Jocelyn
Benson and her successful efforts as dean
to elevate the law school's national reputa-
tion and prestige.
The funds will support the law school's
ongoing efforts to attract talented students
from across the country to study at Wayne
Law and live in Detroit.
Ross, class of 1965, has built a legacy
of real estate development, philanthropy
and NFL sports team ownership. His
total donations to higher education rank
behind only those of fellow American
billionaire Michael Bloomberg. Ross is
owner of the Miami Dolphins and Sun
Life Stadium.
"Wayne State not only played an
important role in my success, but also
in the rebirth of Detroit:' Ross said. "I
am pleased to be able to give back to the

school and also help ensure that this great
educational institution continues to attract
the best and the brightest students from
across the country'
Gilbert, class of 1987, is chairman and
founder of Quicken Loans Inc. and Rock
Ventures LLC, and majority owner of the
2016 NBA Champion Cleveland Cavaliers.
He has invested more than $2.2 billion
to buy and renovate more than 95 com-
mercial properties in Detroit's urban core.
Thousands of jobs have been created, and
more than 15,000 Rock Ventures team
members work in downtown Detroit
"Wayne Law is a premier legal educa-
tion institution, and the leadership across
the university is impressive:' Gilbert said.
"I am proud to support the law school's
efforts to continue attracting top students
from around the world and shape our
brightest and best lawyers right here in the
heart of Detroit:'

Family Organizes
A Fundraiser For
Make-A-Wish

eeting Matthew Chayet, a
West Bloomfield High School
freshman, you would never
guess that since he was a baby he has been
admitted to the hospital more than 30
times ranging from three to 29 nights.
His mother, Fawn, says Matthew has
overcome obstacles doctors didn't think
he would, and he always comes out of the
dark times with a smile and love around
him — and he's always thinking of what
he can do for others.
Now that Matthew has entered high
school, the family's focus is on him enjoy-
ing the normal routine of high school
freshmen.
But that doesn't mean there isn't time to
give back.
"We always taught our kids to give back
whenever they can:' Fawn said. She and
her husband, Adam, had been approached
by Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan
in the past to grant a wish for a Matthew,
but had always turned it down.
"We've always thought Make-A-Wish
was a great organization and always
donated, never imagining we'd ever be
on the receiving end of it. No one ever
really does:' Fawn said, after accepting an

as-yet-unspecified wish for Mathew from
Make-A-Wish.
Once the Chayet family accepted the
wish, they got busy understanding and
learning more about the organization —
and making good things happen for other
kids.
They will host a fundraising event for
Make-A-Wish on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at
Core Cycle, 6716 Orchard Lake Road, West
Bloomfield. There will be exercise classes,
shopping, food from local restaurants and
lots of fun all for a great cause.
Free classes will be held throughout the
day: 6 a.m. spin, 8:30 a.m. circuit, 9:30
a.m. boxing, 5:30 p.m. spin and 6:30 p.m.
boxing. Email fawnchayet@comcast.net to
reserve a spot.
Shop from 4:30-8 p.m. at tables from
Blue Lagoon, Ella Designs, Event Bliss,
Passion4 Fashion, Pawn Chick Shopping
or Ehrlooms Fine Jewelry — a portion of
sales goes to Make-A-Wish.
Or make donations directly to Make-A-
Wish at michiganwish.org. *
