NYC BENEFIT AIDS CANCER CENTER
The Gifts of Art benefit, held Sept. 9
at the National Arts Club in New York
City, had a strong Detroit connection. It
was in memory of Detroit native Laura
(Burdick) Sherman, who died from
breast cancer last year. Her sister, Alice
(Burdick) Schweiger, wanted to honor
her and give back to Memorial Sloan
Kettering Cancer Center, where Laura
was treated.
“I called Sloan Kettering and asked if
I could do a fundraiser in Laura’s name,
and we partnered,” said Schweiger, who
moved with her family to New York from
Ann Arbor 17 years ago.
Needing a theme, Schweiger, who is
a writer but also has been painting at
the famed Arts Student’s League of New
York, created Gifts of Art. “I got 21 art-
ists who all study art at the league to sell
two paintings each — half the proceeds
were to be donated to breast cancer
research at Memorial Sloan Kettering
Cancer Center.”
One of the participants is Schweiger’s
friend and fellow Detroiter Emilie “EJ”
Martin Palef. “I began painting at the
League because of Emilie,” she explains.
“Our 50th Mumford High School
reunion was approaching and we discov-
ered that we both lived in New York City.
She was taking abstract painting at the
League, and I joined her there — the rest
is history.”
Wanting to raise as much money as
possible for the fundraiser, Schweiger
decided to have a raffle. The results were
overwhelming; 60 grand raffle prizes
were donated. Her daughter Melissa
Schweiger Kleinman and son Eric
Schweiger, who were both raised in Ann
Arbor, have been very involved in the
planning.
“We had people flying in from all over
the country to attend, including a friend
of mine from West Bloomfield,” said
Schweiger.
