The 12 celebrity contestants this season do not, as far as I know, include any tribe members. But, I should note that con- testant Jana Kramer, a country-western singer and actress (One Tree Hill), was born and grew up in Rochester Hills. Also, probably the biggest celeb of the 12, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, is already a minor YouTube sensation for his dancing. Back in 2010, he danced the hora (fol- lowing a Chanukah candlelighting cer- emony) with what appears to be a group of Chabad (certainly Orthodox) rabbis (google Rick Perry and hora and you’ll find the clip). Gov. Perry will dance with DWTS pro Emma Slater. This season features the return of pro-dancing brothers Maxim (“Maks”) and Valentin (“Val”) Chmerkovskiy. Maxim, 36, was born in Odessa, the son of a Jewish father and a non-Jewish mother. He’s described himself as Jewish, although he’s not religious. Maxim has danced in most of the seasons since the show began in 2005. Maxim and Valentin Chmerkovskiy included actress Melissa Gilbert, 51, who recently dropped out of a Michigan congressional run, and silver medal win- ning ice-dancer Meryl Davis, who grew up in West Bloomfield. In 2014, Maxim and Davis won their season’s competi- tion and Maxim then took two years off before returning this year. Maxim will be dancing this season with model Amber Rose. Meanwhile, Valentin, 30, is teamed with Olympic gold-winning gymnast Lauren Hernandez. Also, look for pro dancer Sasha Farber, 33, who is teamed with actress Terra Jole. Farber has been a main cast pro for several seasons. In 2010, he toured and danced with Maxim
