metro » Profiting From The Holocaust? A special, one-night-only seminar titled “Profiting from the Holocaust? Legal and Ethical Controversies over Nazi Art Looting,” takes place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, at the Holocaust Memorial Center, Zekelman Family Campus, located at 28123 Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills. This seminar will give attendees a unique look into art looting during WWII and how sales of stolen works bankrolled large parts of the Nazi war Raymond J. machine. Keynote Dowd speaker attorney Raymond J. Dowd will discuss the story behind Nazi looted art, through forced and coerced transfers, and the ethical and legal expectations of its return to its lawful owners. Dowd is a partner in the law firm of Dunnington Bartholow & Miller LLP in New York City. He served as lead trial counsel in notable cases involving art law, copyrights, trade- marks and other matters. Richard A. Herman, a local copy- right attorney and chairperson of the event, and co-chair attorney Jonathan H. Schwartz of the Jewish Bar Association of Michigan are pro- ducing the event to share the moral importance of the return of such art to its owners, as well as its interest to the community as a whole. Attendees will also learn about laws passed in the wake of looting to return stolen art to its rightful owners and the extent to which those laws have been successful via the explora- tion of past and ongoing cases. Moderating the event will be Howard Lupovitch, an associate professor of history and director of the Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies at Wayne State University. A fourth-generation Detroiter, Lupovitch is a graduate of Hillel Day School, the University of Michigan and Columbia University, where he received a Ph.D. in history.
