special, one-night-only
seminar titled “Profiting
from the Holocaust? Legal
and Ethical Controversies over Nazi
Art Looting,” takes place at 7 p.m.
Wednesday, Sept. 14, at the Holocaust
Memorial Center, Zekelman Family
Campus, located at 28123 Orchard
Lake Road in Farmington Hills.

will give attendees
a unique look into
art looting during
WWII and how
sales of stolen
works bankrolled
large parts of
the Nazi war

Dowd
speaker attorney
Raymond J. Dowd will discuss the
story behind Nazi looted art, through
forced and coerced transfers, and the
ethical and legal expectations of its
return to its lawful owners.
Dowd is a partner in the law firm
of Dunnington Bartholow & Miller
LLP in New York City. He served as
lead trial counsel in notable cases
involving art law, copyrights, trade-
marks and other matters.
Richard A. Herman, a local copy-
right attorney and chairperson of
the event, and co-chair attorney
Jonathan H. Schwartz of the Jewish
Bar Association of Michigan are pro-
ducing the event to share the moral
importance of the return of such art
to its owners, as well as its interest to
the community as a whole.
Attendees will also learn about
laws passed in the wake of looting to
return stolen art to its rightful owners
and the extent to which those laws
have been successful via the explora-
tion of past and ongoing cases.
Moderating the event will be
Howard Lupovitch, an associate
professor of history and director of
the Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic
Studies at Wayne State University.
A fourth-generation Detroiter,
Lupovitch is a graduate of Hillel Day
School, the University of Michigan
and Columbia University, where he
received a Ph.D. in history.
