ANNA FREEDMAN, 101, of West
Bloomfield, died Aug. 27, 2016.
She was born in Iowa City, Iowa, on Oct.
5, 1914. She always celebrated her birthday
on Oct. 25 because that is when her Chelm,
Poland, parents said she was born. When
she got her birth certificate to fly to her first
overseas trip to Israel, she saw that she was
actually born on Oct. 5. From then on, she
celebrated her birthday twice in October.
The house that Anna lived in was divided
into two parts. One part included her par-
ents, her and her grandfather. The other
part is where her aunt, uncle and two cous-
ins lived. Each year, the families exchanged
sides so that one family had the front porch
and the other, the vegetable garden.
Her father, Oscar Banks (originally
Bankierer), was a fur trader in Iowa. When
the family moved to Detroit, he started a
bottle business and then a scrap iron and
metal company.
Anna graduated high school from
Detroit’s Commerce High School with her
diploma in business and she worked in
Downtown Detroit at a large department
store.
After she married Jack Freedman, he
began the Freedman Glove and Cap Co. in
which she joined him as a partner, secretary
and buyer. After retirement, they moved to
Southfield. Anna was a lifelong traveler; she
traveled all over the world, meeting new
and interesting people like herself.
Mrs. Freedman is survived by her two
children, Dolores Dvora (Leslie) Vilcone
of Venice, Fla., and Jerome Freedman, of
Berkeley, Calif.
Contributions may be made to a char-
ity of one’s choice. Services and interment
