Noah Aronson Yehudi Menuhin HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY Violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin, the son of Russian immigrants descended from a rabbinical dynasty, made his first public appearance at the age of 7, in velvet knee pants, and was already a star by age 11, when he made his first recordings. He is known as much as a virtuoso as a humanitarian — he slowed his career in the 1940s to play hundreds of concerts for Allied troops in hospitals, played for displaced survi- vors of Bergen-Belsen and performed in South Africa under apartheid. In cel- ebration of Menuhin’s 100th birthday, the Detroit Institute of Arts presents A Centenary Tribute: Menuhin100. Celebrated French film director and vio- linist — and longtime friend to Menuhin — Bruno Monsaingeon will travel to the DIA to join pianist Ivan Moshchuk and cellist Aleksey Shadrin to pay trib- ute to his mentor with a performance of Rachmaninoff’s chamber music and Tchaikovsky’s Trio in A Minor, aka “In Memory of a Great Artist,” 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9 (free with museum admission). At 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, a screening of Monsaingeon’s film Yehudi Menuhin: The Violin of the Century will be followed by a panel discussion with the filmmaker. $7.50-$9.50. Equity was co-produced by Alysia Reiner, 46, and she plays one of the film’s three leads (Reiner’s best known for playing the nasty assistant warden, Fig, on Orange is the New Black). She’s married to actor David Alan Basche (The Exes), 47. Also appearing in a biggish part is Sophie von Haselberg, 29, who is Bette Midler’s daughter. (No, Sophie’s father wasn’t born in a Bavarian castle — he was born in Argentina, the son of a Jewish mother and a German father.) OLYMPIC RECAP Congrats to Jo Aleh, 30, a New Zealander who won the bronze medal in the 470 dinghy class sailing competition (she won gold in 2012) and Aussie Jessica Fox, 22, who won a bronze in the canoe slalom K-1 class (she won silver in 2012). It wasn’t a great Olympics in terms of the number of Jewish Olympic winners or medals won. Still, if you think about it, any medal won by a tribe member defies statistical odds. There are 7-8 billion people in the world and only 15 million are Jewish — that’s about two tenths of 1 percent of the world’s population. The 2016 Jewish medal count is three gold, two silver and four bronzes. That total is better than most countries, including some with a population way above 15 million. All the more reason to be aware of and celebrate great athletes like Aleh, Fox, gymnast Aly Raisman (one gold, two silvers); swimmer Anthony Ervin (two golds) and Israeli judo athletes Or Sasson, 26, and Yarden Gerbi, 27 (who both won bronze). By the way, Yahoo Sports just did a short video interview with Raisman titled How to Date Aly Raisman. In her level-headed way, she discusses whom she might date. It’s cute — just google the title and you’ll find it.
