N ational Council of Jewish Women, Greater Detroit Section volunteers packed 1,200 backpacks filled with school supplies for children in need in grades K-12 in Oakland County on Aug. 18 at the NCJW office. Seventy volunteers of all ages stuffed the backpacks, which were picked up by the Oakland County Schools Homeless Student Education group for distribution. Jewish Family Service will disperse backpacks for Jewish children in need in Oakland County. NCJW/Greater Detroit volunteers have organized the purchase and packing of school supplies and backpacks annually since 2000. This project is funded by grants from the DeRoy Testamentary Foundation, Consumers Energy and the Phillip and Elizabeth Filmer Memorial Trust. NCJW further leveraged grant monies by purchas- ing the backpacks at Meijer, which provided supplies at a discount. For 125 years, NCJW/Greater Detroit has provided a variety of services for children, most recently with its Back 2 School Store serving more than 300 children in need living in the city of Detroit and tutoring/ reading to children at the Coleman A.
