Schmall is a two-year Maccabi Games athlete. This was Zelmanov’s fourth year competing at the Maccabi Games and Umansky is a three-year Maccabi Games competitor. MEDAL FOR KEEPING COOL Detroit dancer Melanie Taylor received a Midot medal at the JCC Maccabi Games in St. Louis for showing grace and kind- ness in a difficult situation. What happened? It had nothing to do with dancing and everything to do with maturity and quickly defusing a poten- tially heated discussion. Detroit dance coach Linda Taylor (Melanie’s mother) said a Maccabi Games volunteer snapped at Melanie during a dinner in a case of mistaken identity regarding garbage being placed in the wrong container. The volunteer was so impressed with Melanie’s level-headed response that she worked hard to find out her name and recommend her for the medal. This was the fourth and final Maccabi Games for Melanie, 16, who will be a junior this fall at Birmingham Seaholm High School. 10% OFF ‘MY DAD IS PROUD OF ME’ Adam Fox has been going to Temple Shir Shalom games in the Inter- Congregational Men’s Club Softball League since he was 5. For many years, he was the team’s bat boy. Now 21, he’s played for Shir Shalom for four years and is carrying on the good name of his father, Jeff Fox, a beloved former Shir Shalom player who died in 2011. The league’s annual Jeff Fox Sportsmanship Award is a coveted honor. Each team selects a nominee and the winner is chosen at random because each nominee is worthy of the award. Adam was the nominee for Shir Shalom No. 1 this season. He won the award. “It’s difficult to put into words what it means to win the award,” he said. “The fact I won the award named after my dad is surreal. It’s truly an honor, and I know my dad is proud of me.” FREE BOWLING NIGHT Bowling season is right around the corner, and the B’nai B’rith Downtown Fox-MLZG League is getting everything rolling with a free bowling and dinner night at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Drakeshire Lanes in Farmington Hills.
