The excitement of the author to be rid of her frizz by means of chemical treatment or the reference to her curls as her “Jewish hairitage” that she was happy to part with. As a “Curly Girl” and a curly hair- styling specialist, I try to give my cli- ents an alternative to frizz with prod- ucts, proper application procedures and ingredients that benefit the hair and scalp long term. I help women with curls to love their own hair as opposed to trying to have something they don’t have. Or to conform to an expectation of perfection that’s unnec- essary. As a Jewish woman, I am both proud of my heritage and “hairitage.” I have many Jewish clients, and we bond over our shared hair traits. It is indeed a common thread in the Jewish culture to have curly hair and, person- ally, I am proud of it. The author states that her curls will return, and I hope that she’s right. I have seen many other types of treat- ments go terribly wrong where the curls were permanently damaged and had to be cut off or they just broke off on their own. To those with Jewish “hairitage,” I wish you frizz-free healthy curls that look like you, not like anyone else. Marni Foster West Bloomfield Fond Memories Of Northland Mall I read with great interest the article by Esther Allweiss Ingber (“Northland Memories,” Aug. 4, page 10) on for- mer Oak Park Mayor Gerald Naftaly’s new book Images of Modern America: Northland Mall, which I now own. I grew up in Oak Park (moved there in 1956 at age 5), could see Northland from my house and would always walk to the mall with my sister and my friends. Northland was such a big part of the lives of so many of us from the Detroit area and Ms. Ingber’s article shows the Jewish roots of it as well. Gerald Naftaly has a love of preserv- ing local history. Now that Northland is no longer extant, his book does a wonderful service that allows current and former Detroit area residents to enjoy the reminiscences of this great icon. Thank you for writing about this new book by a nice Jewish boy! William Molner Lansing Letters to the Editor: We prefer letters that relate to articles in the Jewish News. I have had a talk with my teenagers about alcohol consumption at parties. Can you write about alcohol again? A concerned Mom. Dear Concerned Mom, In 2007 in the Jewish News, someone asked me to write about alcohol consumption. Interesting that I was asked the same question about what is safe alcohol consumption for adults and for the young. Let's look at the physiological effects of alcohol consumption.
