Chabad Torah Center in West
Bloomfield is dedicating a new
Sefer Torah on Sunday, Aug. 28. The
Torah is being donated by Jerome and
Malca (Lis) Katz of West Bloomfield,
and Israel and Zahava (Lis) Diminsky
of Jerusalem in memory of their par-
ents, Shmuel Yitzchak and Mina Maita
Lis.
Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg, spiritual
leader of the Torah Center for more
than 40 years, notes that “this Torah
dedication takes place at the comple-
tion of a Hakhel year. The final two
commandments in the Torah are that
of Hakhel and that of writing a Sefer
Torah.
“Hakhel was the mitzvah of gather-
ing every single Jewish man, woman
and child every seven years in the
Holy Temple in Jerusalem. And our
sages note that the name Israel is an
acronym for the words Yesh Shishim
Ribo Otiot l’Torah — there are 600,000
letters in the Torah, corresponding to
the 600,000 root souls that comprise
the entire Jewish people. Thus, both of
these mitzvot underscore the theme of
the unity of our people.”
Associate Rabbi Shneur Silberberg
adds, “According to the Talmud, both
the Land of Israel and the holy Torah
can only be acquired through toil
and sacrifice. Shmuel Yitzchak — a
Holocaust survivor — and Mina Maita
Lis, who lived through the birth of the
State of Israel and through all of the
wars endured and fought by our coun-

try, embody the principle of toil and
sacrifice for Torah and Israel.”
A special historic Torah, also a
Holocaust survivor, will join the
celebration. On Kristallnacht, the
infamous “night of broken glass”
when Jewish homes, businesses and
synagogues were destroyed across
Germany on Nov. 9, 1938, 14-year-old
Isaac Schwartz of Hamburg saved a
single Torah scroll from a burning pyre
of sacred Jewish items.
Today, 78 years later, that same
Torah scroll is on a world tour and will
be escorted to West Bloomfield from
California by Bais Chabad member
Marty Newman. This Torah will join
the new Torah on parade and during
rejoicing. The Torah scroll will also
be read from at services in the Torah
Center on Shabbat, Aug. 27.
The Sunday event will include
a parade down Orchard Lake and
Maple Roads (ending at Bais Chabad)
starting at 11:30 a.m.; live music and
dancing; hand-held drums for all who
want to participate; traditional Hakafot
(dancing and singing with the Torah)
at Bais Chabad to celebrate the new
Torah; refreshments; and pure Jewish
pride, joy, love of Torah, and celebra-
tion of survival and perseverance.
The community is welcome to
participate at no charge. For more
information about the celebration and
about acquiring a letter in the Sefer
Torah, contact Shneur Silberberg at
