all it parity or call it competi-
tive. Each describes the kind of
the season it’s been this summer
in the Inter-Congregational Men’s Club
Softball League.
Five teams tied for first place in the
regular-season standings. There are 17
teams in the league, and nearly 30 per-
cent were in the hunt for the No. 1 seed
in the playoffs.
League directors had to dig deep into
the rulebook to sort out the logjam and
determine playoff seeds. When the dust
settled, the order was Temple Israel No. 1,
Temple Israel No. 2, Temple Shir Shalom
No. 1, Adat Shalom Synagogue No. 2 and
Congregation B’nai Moshe.
“We used win-loss-tie record, number
of wins, head-to-head record for two-way
ties, head-to-head run differential for
two-way ties, total runs allowed and total

runs scored to break ties,” said league
director Chuck Freedman.
“The league has been much more
competitive this season than in previous
years,” he said.
The playoffs began Aug. 3. No. 16 seed
Adat Shalom No. 1 beat No. 17 seed B’nai
Israel Synagogue, ending B’nai Israel’s
first year in the league with a loss.
Twelve playoff games were played Aug.
7 at Community Sports Park and Drake
Sports Park in West Bloomfield, narrow-
ing the field to a Final Four. Semifinals
and the league championship game will
be played Aug. 21 at Community Sports
Park after the league takes off Aug. 14 for
Tisha b’Av.
Just as important as the playoff games
Aug. 7 were the presentation of the Jeff
Fox Sportsmanship Award and a league
picnic at Community Sports Park for
players and their families.
Each team nominates a player for
the Sportsmanship Award, named for a
beloved former Shir Shalom player who
died Dec. 22, 2011. The winner is select-
ed at random because each nominee is
deserving of the honor.
Freedman said he’s excited about the
league’s future because the level of com-
petition and camaraderie are increas-
ing along with the number of teams.
Seventeen teams are the most in the
league’s 21-year history.
“We’ve grown tremendously the last
few years and there’s potential for more
growth,” he said.
Freedman said league director Steve
Achtman received this message from a
player:
“Thank you for everything and run-
ning the league so smoothly. This is the
most fun I’ve had in softball, and I play
a lot. I always look forward to Sundays,
and I’m so glad to be a part of this broth-
erhood.”
The annual fall Inter-Congregational
Men’s Club Softball League will begin
after Labor Day. Teams are made up of
players from across the Jewish commu-
nity.
