metro » Back Pain? Neck Pain? 2016 Walk Of Ages Goes Virtual; Pick Your Day And Place F or 13 years, Friends of Jewish Senior Life, the aux- iliary supporting programs for older adults on two campuses in Metro Detroit, hosted a Walk of Ages on the West Bloomfield campus. Walking teams and supporters usu- ally gathered on an August Sunday to cheer on the grand marshals and stroll along the hilly green campus as a community. This year, Friends Director Leslie Katz and her committee of volunteers are trying something new: a virtual walk. There will still be a dedication lane of sponsored lawn signs lining the campus, grand marshals and sponsors on Aug. 28 — but the walk this year will take place in many neighborhoods, organized individu- ally or in groups of friends on a day of their choosing. Virtual fundraisers are a new way to capture millennials and free supporters from the obligation of gathering on a certain day and time as a way to raise support for organi- zations. The Friends Walk, with its own hashtag — #FriendsWalkofAges — asks supporters to pull together a group of friends, perhaps chat over brunch or coffee, and walk on their own along their favorite paths or city streets. What’s more, the hashtag enables walkers to post their own photos, which Katz can gather into a virtual, and real, scrapbook of memories of people all over Metro Detroit con- nected by their support for Jewish Senior Life. “While this is a non-traditional approach to such an event, we thought we’d try something new this year,” says Katz, who already has 60 signs for the dedication lane and a corral of sponsors. She is sending Friends shoelaces in her mailing for the event, so participants can lace up while building brand awareness for the organization. Matt and Nicole Lester are the grand marshals, along with grand marshal emeritus, JN columnist Danny Raskin.
