2016.
She is survived by her
sons and daughter-in-
law, Joel and Rosalyn
Rabin
Kaplan, and Sheldon
Kaplan; brother, Irwin
Berghoff; sisters-in-
law, Maxine Berghoff and Lois Berghoff;
grandchildren, David (Talia) Kaplan; their
children, Benjamin and Eliana, Jonathan
(Rhianna Dow) Kaplan; Jonathan’s son,
Fletcher. She is also survived by many lov-
ing nieces, nephews, other family members
and friends.
Mrs. Rabin was the wife of the late
Irving Rabin; sister of the late Albert “Jack”
Berghoff and the late Wellington “Billy”
Berghoff. Her parents were Rose (Phillips)
and Charles Berghoff.

JOYCE SCHON, 64, of
Detroit, died July 19,
2016.
She was a civil rights
attorney associated with
United for Equality and
Affirmative Action Legal
Defense Fund, previously
Schon
with Scheff, Washington
& Driver, where she was
co-counsel of record to
the Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action
through the U.S. Supreme Court challenge to
Michigan’s constitutional amendment mak-
ing affirmative action illegal.
Ms. Schon was a graduate of Southfield
High School, the University of Michigan
and Wayne State University Law School.
Before returning to Detroit in 2004, she
worked in the AIDS ward of San Francisco
General Hospital for 22 years through the
height of the epidemic; she also served as
union steward, representing coworkers in
contract negotiations and grievances with
management. Previously she organized cleri-
cal workers at the University of Michigan
and drove a truck around Michigan for the
People’s Food Cooperative.
An accomplished pianist and vocalist,
Joyce had a discerning ear for many genres
of music, becoming a grand opera devotee in
recent years.
She is survived by her mother, Florence
Schon of Bloomfield Hills; sister, Laura
(Richard) Schiller of Southfield; brother,
David Schon (Mike Brown) of Washington,
D.C.; nieces, Rachel Schiller (Michael
McWhirter), Emily (Ken) Schapira, Erica
Schiller; great-niece, Maxine McWhirter;
great-nephew, Huxley McWhirter; aunt and
uncle, Norma and Seymour Lankowsky;
beloved friends, including the many students
and civil rights activists she mentored.
Interment was at Machpelah Cemetery.
