GOP BIG PARTY NOTES
The first night of the GOP Convention (July
18) featured actor Antonio Sabato Jr., 44,
talking about his legal immigration from
Italy. Sabato’s “beefcake” career started
strong with a several-year gig on General
Hospital, the soap opera, in the mid-’90s.
But since about 2005, his career has been
pretty much limited to short-lived real-
ity shows and a season on Dancing with
the Stars. Quite recently, he appeared in
Las Vegas introducing the Chippendale
Dancers — he was half naked, like the
Chippendales. I doubt he’s increased his
casting appeal by telling ABC News right
after his speech: “[I] absolutely believe
President Barack Obama is a Muslim. I
believe that he’s on the other side … the
Middle East. He’s with the bad guys.”
The backstory: Sabato’s maternal grand-
mother was a Czech Jew who was the
only member of her family to survive the
Holocaust. In the ’60s, she managed to
travel to Italy with her non-Jewish Czech
husband and their daughter, Yvonne.
Yvonne stayed in Italy and wed Antonio’s

Stewart

Italian father — Yvonne didn’t know her
mother was Jewish until she was an adult.
Antonio, in a 2009 interview, said he real-
izes he is “Jewish by blood” — but not by
faith.
Jon Stewart, 53, made two rare post-
Daily Show appearances on July 18. If you
missed both/either you can catch them
on YouTube. He appeared with Stephen
Colbert in a comedic skit titled “Only Jon
Stewart Can Make Sense of the Trump
Candidacy.” The setup had Colbert visit-
ing “the hermit” Stewart in a backwoods
cabin to inform him that Trump is the
GOP nominee. Colbert and Stewart then
recited some outrageous, but real, Trump
quotes to each other, including this one:
“I [Trump] have black guys counting my
money; I hate it; the only guys I want
