One-Girl
Show

Steve Stein | Contributing Writer

C

aitlin Finerty will be a one-girl
show at the JCC Maccabi Games
in St. Louis.
The 14-year-old Bloomfield Hills High
School sophomore will be the lone golfer
representing Detroit during the July
31-Aug. 5 event.
Kevin Taylor, her coach, won’t be in
St. Louis because Detroit has only one
golfer. He said Finerty is ready for the
challenge of being on her own on the
golf course.
“Caitlin has a lot of ability and poten-
tial; golf is in her blood,” he said. “I told
her [Maccabi] would be a wonderful
opportunity to improve her game.”
This will be the third time Finerty
will participate in the Maccabi Games,
but the first time as a golfer. She was in
musical theater in ArtsFest two years
ago in Detroit and last year in Fort
Lauderdale, Fla.
She said she wanted to do something
different this year at the Maccabi Games,
and golf was the logical choice.
“I love the Maccabi Games. It’s one
of my favorite things to do,” she said.
“I want to play on our high school’s
varsity golf team this fall, and I want to
make golf a lifetime sport, so I decided
to switch.”
Finerty played on the Bloomfield
Hills junior varsity girls golf team as a
freshman.
Taylor and Finerty have been working
hard this month preparing her for St.
Louis. Four area country clubs — Pine
Lake, Tam-O-Shanter and Twin Beach
in West Bloomfield and Forest Lake in
Bloomfield Hills — have allowed them
to play practice rounds for free.
“We really appreciate that,” Taylor said.
Her family lives off the fourth-hole
green at Pine Lake and she practices
putting there. She’s participated in Pine
Lake’s junior golf program for several
years. She’s a caddy at Forest Lake.
Finerty also has been getting golf
tips from her father, Tim Finerty,
a 3-handicap at Pine Lake, and
her grandfather, Pat Finerty, an
outstanding golfer.
“Caitlin is a long hitter. Now I
see her hitting the ball far and with
accuracy,” Taylor said. “Her short game is
improving, too.”
Besides getting ready for the
Maccabi Games, she attended a golf
camp at Michigan State University,
played in a junior golf tournament

O-Shanter Country Club.

at Bay Pointe Golf Club in West
Bloomfield and is taking driver’s
education and an online course.
“I’m hoping to make a lot of new
friends at Maccabi I’ll keep in contact
with,” she said. “That happened last year
in Fort Lauderdale.”
As for golf, “I want to make good
shots in each round,” she said. “I won’t be
the best golfer there; I know that. But I’ll
do my best.”
She said her father may fly to St. Louis
to watch her play. Caitlin’s mother is
Natalie Finerty. Her sister Carly, 12, and
a brother, C.J., 6, also play golf.
Opening ceremonies for the St. Louis
Maccabi Games will be Sunday, July 31.
About 1,200 teens from across the
U.S. and other countries are expected
to compete and participate in a JCC
Cares service project to pack 150,000
meals for the Harvey Kornblum Jewish
Food Pantry.

DOUBLEEAGLE FLIES
Michael Mendelson has some impressive
accomplishments on his golf resume.
He’s a four-time club championship
runner-up at Knollwood Country Club
in West Bloomfield. He was a club cham-
pion at Green Gables Country Club in
Denver, Colo.
Now he can add
shooting a double-
eagle after an amaz-
ing shot July 16
at Franklin Hills
Country Club in
Franklin.
Mendelson, 57, of
New York City, holed
Michael
a 4-iron from 200
Mendelson
yards out at the tough
454-yard, par-5 15th
hole on his way to an 82 for the round.
The shot was especially impressive
because it was from under a tree and
Mendelson’s friends all call him a short-
game specialist.
