PEOPLE FEAR AUTONOMOUS CARS
NEWVEHICLE QUALITY IS UP
Twenty years ago, most people would
have dismissed the idea of a car driving
itself, but some manufacturers are mak-
ing strides in this area, including Audi
and Mercedes. Other companies such
as Google and Uber have been testing
their self-driving cars — also known as
autonomous vehicles — on highways
since 2009.
It could be years before autonomous
cars are ready for our roads. And as
much as self-driving cars intrigue the
public, three in four people say they’re
afraid to ride in them, according to a
new survey by AAA.
What many people don’t realize
is that cars with semiautonomous
technologies — the building blocks of
self-driving cars — are already on the
New-vehicle quality is up 6 percent in 2016,
compared with 2015, according to the J.D.
Power 2016 U.S. Initial Quality Study — the
largest year-over-year increase in vehicle quality
since 2009.
For just the second time in the 30-year his-
tory of the study, U.S. domestic brands collec-
tively have lower problem levels than all their
import counterparts combined. The study
shows year-over-year quality improvements for
all three U.S. domestic automakers. Kia ranks
highest in initial quality, according to the
study, followed by Porsche, Hyundai, Toyota
and BMW.
Chrysler and Jeep are the most improved
brands. General Motors, with seven model-level
awards, is the “automaker with the mostest,”
followed by Toyota with six and Hyundai and
Volkswagen each with four.
roads. These technologies can take con-
trol of the car to perform certain tasks,
such as parallel parking for a driver.
Experience using cars with semi-
autonomous features seems to ease
those fears. People who own cars with
semiautonomous technologies are 75
percent more likely to trust the high-
tech tools than those who don’t own
cars with these features, according to
the AAA survey.

Fiat Chrysler has launched a public bug
bounty program on the Bugcrowd plat-
form to enhance the cybersecurity of its
vehicles.
“We want to encourage independent
security researchers to reach out to us
and share what they’ve found so that we
can fix potential vulnerabilities before
they’re an issue for our consumers,” said
Titus Melnyk, senior manager of secu-
rity architecture at FCA.
“Exposing or publicizing vulnerabili-
ties for the singular purpose of grabbing
headlines or fame does little to protect
the consumer,” added Melnyk. “Rather,
we want to reward security researchers
for their time and effort, which ulti-
mately benefits us all.”
Bugcrowd manages all reward pay-
outs. A reported vulnerability could
earn a bug bounty of $150 to $1,500.
