epiphany moment as they re-explore a Jewish concept they may have not visited since their childhood Hebrew school days. I can see it in their eyes, and it is a very powerful experience.” One of Faudem’s students for five years now is West Bloomfield resi- dent Erika Yaker, 46, a therapist who even finds herself drawing on the lessons of Melton in her professional life. A member of Temple Israel, she started Melton when her oldest son, Brandon, was preparing for his bar mitzvah. Studying and discussing “compelling” texts in the company of other women from a variety of Jewish backgrounds was the best way to start a Monday morning, she said. “Learning through Melton made the stuff you learned in Hebrew school — all those stories from the Torah, those most ancient bits of wisdom — even more approachable and relatable as an adult,” said Yaker, who enrolled in the Parent Education Program track. “As my son went through his bar mitzvah year, I found myself hav- ing a deeper understanding of the whole process of being Jewish and more intently listening to other b’nai mitzvah as they gave their dvar Torah speeches each week. Melton gave me that deeper and broader understand- ing of the texts. The questioning and open-ended discussions are the reasons why I continue my graduate learning year after year.” J OIN T R EP LACEMEN T J UST F OR Y OU . * SAMPLE CLASSES AND MORE Melton Detroit will offer sample class sessions from 6:45-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Temple Shir Shalom in West Bloomfield and Thursday, Aug. 11, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek’s Berman Center for Jewish Education in Southfield, and from 10-11:15 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at the JCC in West Bloomfield.
