Shanas, who values that instructional
experience as a motivator to keep with
her goals, is the daughter of Polish
Holocaust survivors. Her parents met
and married in Israel before moving to
the United States in 1964 and having
their only child the next year.
As a family, they went back to Israel
10 years later, deciding to return to what
had been home for her mom and dad.
Shanas married Yaron Shanas in Israel
and had both of their sons, No’ad and
Nitan, in that country.
“My husband worked for Intel, and
we were sent to the United States on a
relocation,” she says. “It felt good, and
then we toyed with the idea of returning
to Israel.”
That stay extended a year.
“After returning to the States, I first
participated in gallery and art center

shows,” says Shanas, who works out of a
home studio and continues projects on
family vacations. Last year, she started
on a series of outdoor, fine arts festivals
in Florida, Massachusetts, New York and
Illinois. Her work also is shown by gal-
leries in New York, Florida, Illinois and
Pennsylvania.
As Shanas anticipates her West
Bloomfield debut, she looks forward
to meeting viewers, who will have the
opportunity to enjoy food from local res-
taurants and hear music performed by
the Sheila Landis Trio, One Love Reggae
Band and Hot Metal Groove.
Shanas brings psychology training
into her experiences and artistry, which
will be seen at an invitational resi-
dency in Poland just before her visit to
Michigan. The work displayed in Poland
will travel throughout Europe.
“I love studying people,” the sculptor
says. “I’m fascinated with how much our
body language tells stories.”
