NICE JEWISH
GIRLS
Sisters Este,
Danielle and
Alana Haim are
the hot, smart,
Taylor Swift-
besties — and
Jewish — pop
divas that make
Lynne Konstantin up the indie-
Arts & Life Editor
rock trio Haim
(pronounced
like chaim). Their
father, Moti, was born in Israel; for their
first gig, in a Hollywood deli, they were
paid in matzah-ball soup. See them per-
form, along with G-Easy, Mac Demarco,
Matt and Kim and many more at the Mo
Pop Festival at the West Riverfront Park
in Detroit, two days of music, art, food
and beer. Haim performs Saturday, July
23; the festival runs through Sunday,
July 24. Mopopfestival.com.

NICE JEWISH BOY
Last March, David Draiman, pierced
and tattooed lead singer of metal-
band Disturbed, thrilled and chilled
Conan fans — and then legions of
YouTube viewers — when he and the
band performed Simon & Garfunkel’s
The Sounds of Silence with a 15-person
orchestra. Draiman, whose parents

Haim

are Israeli Americans, was raised obser-
vant, attending five Jewish day schools
before training to become a chazzan. He
also wrote Never Again, on the band’s
Asylum album, an anthem railing against
Holocaust denial and anti-Semitism.
See Disturbed, along with Breaking
Benjamin, at the Showdown Fest,
Tuesday, July 26, at DTE Energy Music
Theatre. $29.95-$78. Palacenet.com.

CONVENTION COVERAGE
The Republican Convention runs
though the evening of Thursday, July
21. The Democratic Convention begins
on Monday, July 25, and runs through
Thursday, July 28. Seth Meyers, 43, who
replaced Jimmy Fallon as the host of The
Late Show on NBC in February 2014, has
really emerged in 2016 as a top-notch
political commentator in the vein of Jon
Stewart. He wields a rapier-like wit as he
pokes fun at political figures or explains
political-related issues. As one might
expect, Donald Trump is a frequent tar-
get. Yes, he views things from a liberal
bent, but that does not diminish the fact
that he is objectively funny and smart.
So it doesn’t come as that much of a
surprise that Meyers is doing a Late Night
show that will air live right after the
final night of the Republican convention
(Friday, 12:30 a.m. EDT).
Meyers, whose paternal grandfather
was Jewish, doesn’t define himself
as Jewish, but I think that the tribe is
“absorbing” him. In 2013, he married

Ashe and Meyers

Wood

Yelchin

his long-term girlfriend, attorney Alexi
Ashe, now 33, before a rabbi. They had
a son in 2015. Ashe’s mother, Joan, is
