A

year after launching the
Center for Elder Abuse
Awareness and its emer-
gency shelter for victims of elder
abuse, Jewish Senior Life has fielded
hundreds of calls, made hundreds of
referrals and recommendations to help
keep older adults safe, and sheltered
dozens of seniors who fell prey to the
machinations of elder abuse.
“Sadly, elder abuse is very preva-
lent,” says Barbra Giles, LMSW, ACSW,
JSL’s associate director of aging ser-
vices and founder of the center. “It
is our goal to educate the public on
this important issue and, in doing so,
keep older adults safe. Many abusers
are close to their victims — family,
friends, caregivers — and many older
adults are reluctant to report abuse for
fear of having no one to care for them.
We must put an end to elder abuse
once and for all and protect our great-
est generation.”
On June 15, JSL celebrated World
Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Belle
Isle, in collaboration with Senior
Power Days, marking one year since
the creation of Southeast Michigan’s
only Center for Elder Abuse Awareness
and emergency shelter.
Keynote speaker was U.S. Attorney
Barbara L. McQuade, who focused
on how to keep older adults safe and
prevent fraud. She was followed by a
panel discussion among experts in the
field.
Although one in 24 older adults is a

victim of elder abuse, neglect or aban-
donment, few report their troubles.
Elder abuse costs the nation $2 billion
every year and puts victims at high
risk of premature death from abuse
and neglect.
Funded by an initial $25,000 grant,
the Center for Elder Abuse Prevention
at Jewish Senior Life received a more
recent grant for $140,000 from Gov.
Rick Snyder’s Say No to Elder Adult
Abuse campaign.
The center, which operates a shelter-
without-walls, brings together non-
profit agencies in a collaborative effort
to protect older adults. It also receives
funding through Oakland County for
Oakland County residents in need of
shelter.
Victims can seek refuge in a JSL
community for as long as 90 days
while social workers aid in resolving
abusive situations and creating safe
transitions to return home safely.
Services and shelter are provided to
victims at no charge. Assisted living,
independent living and skilled nursing
home options are available. The pro-
gram works in partnership with Jewish
Family Service and Danto Family
Health Care Center.
