tudents for Israel became a prominent
voice on Wayne State University’s
campus last semester. As president
of the organization, its members and I have
put on many successful programs, including
a discussion with Israeli superstar Assi Azar,
host of Big Brother-Israel.
On April 18, we put on a show and
demonstration of Krav Maga and capoeira
to celebrate Israeli Independence Day. We
wanted to share some Israeli culture with
WSU students.
The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) created
Krav Maga as a system of self-defense to be
taught to all Israeli soldiers. The IDF is man-
datory for all Israeli citizens, and Krav Maga
is a big part of Israeli culture. Two instructors
from International Krav Maga of Michigan in
West Bloomfield demonstrated krav maga.
Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that

is also immensely popular in Israel, the
sport’s second home after Brazil. Israeli Baz
Michaeli, who runs the Michigan Center for
Capoeira in Southfield, brought a group to
demonstrate capoeira.
The event was scheduled to be at the
WSU Student Center, but the unusually warm
spring day allowed us to have the demon-
stration outside and bring these amazing
martial art forms and Israeli celebration to a
diverse group of more than 200 students.
This event would not have been possible
without Hillel of Metro Detroit and the WSU
Dean of Students Office. @

Jessica Davidov of West Bloomfield recently
completed her sophomore year at Wayne State
University in Detroit. She is the 2016-2017 WSU
Students for Israel president.
