he Jewish Student Union (JSU) at
Michigan State University received
the Most Collaborative Group
Award at the 2016 Associated Students of
Michigan State University (ASMSU) Annual
Multicultural Banquet
The JSU was selected by its peers from
the Council of Racial and Ethnic Students
(CORES), Council of Progressive Students
(COPS) and ASMSU to receive this award
based on a variety of JSU-led programs
including Destination Detroit, Destination
Lansing, Israel Fest, Sparty’s Hanukkah Party
and Sparty’s Bar Mitzvah Party.
Recognition was also given for its role in
being a dynamic voice and leader in working
with other student organizations and MSU
administration.
JSU President Nathaniel Strauss said, “My
work with the Jewish Student Union over
the past four years would not be as special

T

if it weren’t for the amazing student lead-
ers I’ve had the pleasure of interacting with
through Associated Students of Michigan
State University, MSU CORES and COPS, and
the rest of the student body.
“I want to thank MSU Hillel for always
supporting us, the amazing Jewish Student
Union board for working so incredibly hard
and our peers for this award. Change cannot
happen alone.”
The JSU provides a wide variety of pro-
gramming that caters to the interests of
Jewish students while also creating oppor-
tunities for peers to explore Jewish cultural
and ethnic diversity at MSU. The JSU serves
as the umbrella organization that supports
the programs of a multitude of social, cul-
tural and religious groups. It is co-sponsored
and funded by the Associated Students of
Michigan State University and the Lester &
Jewell Morris Hillel Jewish Student Center. @

GENOCIDE EDUCATION BILL SIGNED INTO LAW

On June 14, Gov. Rick Snyder signed
into law House Bill 4493, mandating
the teaching of genocides, including the
Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust.
The new law states: “Beginning in
2016-2017 school year, the board of a
school district or board of directors of
a public school academy shall ensure
that the school district’s or public school
academy’s social studies curriculum
for grades 8-12 includes age- and
grade-appropriate instruction about

genocide, including, but not limited to,
the Holocaust and Armenian Genocide.
The legislature recommends a combined
total of six hours of this instruction dur-
ing grades 8-12.”
The original legislation was sponsored
by Rep. Klint Kesto (R-West Bloomfield)
and passed the House of Representatives
with overwhelming support. It went onto
the full Senate after it was passed in the
Senate education committee, chaired by
State Sen. Phil Pavlov (R-Port Huron).
