MAAS CULTURE PRIZES
AWARDED TO ARTISTS

The Benard L. Maas Foundation, in partner-
ship with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, recently named visual artist Barry Roth
and video artist and producer Oren Goldenberg
the recipients of the annual Benard L. Maas
Prize for Achievement in Jewish Culture and
Continuity.
Barry Roth is the son of a Hungarian immi-
grant whose family arrived in the United States
in the 1920s. Raised in Northwest Detroit, Roth
has drawn on his Jewish cultural background as
one of the sources that have profoundly influ-
enced his artistic vision.
For more than a decade, Roth taught photog-
raphy in the Art & Art History Department at
Wayne State University where he collaborated
with Cary Loren (a former Maas Prize recipient),
on the art magazine Nightcrawlers; a complete
set of nine issues was purchased by the Museum
of Modern Art in New York.
Oren Goldenberg is a video artist and pro-
ducer based in Detroit. His work ranges from

experimental dance to political satire, social
documentary to feature film, multi-media instal-
lations to fake Kickstarter videos. Goldenberg
is a 2013 Kresge Fellow in the Visual Arts,
Best Filmmaker (Real Detroit, 2011) and Best
Michigan Filmmaker (AAFF, 2006).
A graduate of the University of Michigan,
Goldberg has created films and videos for 15
years. He is also the owner of Cass Corridor
Films.
A prize of $5,000 has been presented to each
artist.
