but he’s back! The new tribe member is
Charlotte Gainsbourg, 44, as a French
scientist. Spiner, in case you’re not plac-
ing him, played “Data,” the android officer
on Star Trek: Next Generation.
Like the original, the sequel was
co-written and co-produced by Dean
Devlin, 53, who describes himself as
a “Jewish/Filipino with an Irish name.”
His late father, TV director Don Devlin,
changed his last name to Devlin from
“Siegel.” Dean’s mother, the late Pilar

Seurat, played exotic Asian characters in
the ’50s and ’60s. Dean, their only child,
is a practicing Jew. His wife is actress
Lisa Brenner, 42 (born Lisa Goldstein).
She had big parts on soap operas in the
mid-’90s but now only takes an occa-
sional TV guest role. The large amount
of Jewish content in the original was
mostly Dean’s doing. Still, he found out
after the fact that in a number of Arab
countries one brief scene was cut out.
You may recall a moment when the
remnant planes of many countries’ air
forces are on the same field and two
Israeli planes, with an Israeli flag flying
nearby, are parked near planes from an
Arab country and each country’s pilots,
united in a common cause, nod at each
other.
