AT THE MOVIES
Opening Friday, June 24: Free State
of Jones is based on a fascinating true
story. In 1864, Newt Knight (Matthew
McConaughey), a Southern white farmer
who lived in in southwestern Mississippi’s
Jones County, led other local white
farmers and slaves in an armed revolt
against the Confederacy that created
the “Free State of Jones.” He continued
his struggle against injustice during
and after Reconstruction and had two
families — one with his first, white wife
— and another with a black wife, after
separating from his first wife. The director
and screenwriter is Gary Ross, 59 (The
Hunger Games; Seabiscuit). Smithsonian
magazine’s website has a great article

about Ross, how he came to make the
film and becoming an amateur historian,
consulting sources to ensure the film’s
veracity. It also covers Knight’s life history
and how his many descendants form, to
this day, a separate group in the county,
not quite accepted by blacks or whites. To
see the article, visit smithsonianmag.com
and search “Free State of Jones.”

defenses that Earth’s countries have cre-
ated in anticipation of their return. As in
the original, only the ingenuity of a few
