For most of us — short of opening day for the Tigers — this is the best time of the year. So, where are you going and what are you going to do for your vacation? In Michigan, for years, we have headed north to places like Charlevoix, long a summer haven for the Detroit and Chicago Jewish communities. Or perhaps we go to another famous Michigan resort area, Grand Haven. While surfing the William Davidson Digital Archives and thinking of summer, I wondered where would one go for vaca- tion, say, 65 years ago? On page 6 of the June 22, 1951, issue of the Jewish Chronicle, you will find the answer. South Haven was a popular destination for Jewish Detroiters who wished to escape the city. You could stay at the Michigan Beach Hotel and have a sandy beach, a private bath and an air-conditioned dining room with the “finest Jewish cuisine.” Or maybe you might stay at Fidelman’s or Steuben’s. Or, the very unique Baron’s. It not only had “hot and cold running water in every room” and “kosher-style” food, it boasted the only “nite club in South Haven.” All for $57.50! Hot and cold run- ning water? What more could you want in a modern resort?
